Liberia's County Meet: A Double-Edged Sword in National Unity and Sports Development

J. Cole Bangalu, Minister of Youth and Sports, Liberia

Liberia National County Sports Meet, slated to commence on January 12, 2025, stands as a pivotal event in the nation's social fabric. This annual gathering, which brings together athletes and spectators from all 15 counties, serves as a rare unifying force in a country often divided along political lines. However, a closer examination of the budgetary allocations and government support reveals a complex picture with both promising developments and worrying trends.

The 2025 Draft National Budget showcases a significant boost in funding for the County Sports Meet, with the allocation soaring from US$150,000 in 2024 to US$400,000 in 2025. This substantial increase of over 166% signals the government's recognition of the event's importance in fostering national cohesion. Yet, this positive step is overshadowed by severe cuts in other crucial areas of sports funding.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports faces a challenging scenario with a total budget of merely US$6 million for 2025. Of this sum, US$2 million is earmarked for the At-Risk Youth program, leaving a paltry US$4 million to be distributed among more than 25 sporting federations. This allocation is grossly inadequate for comprehensive sports development across the nation.

Perhaps the most alarming aspect of the budget is the drastic reduction in football funding. The allocation for football has plummeted from US$150,000 in 2024 to a mere US$50,000 in 2025, a staggering 66% cut. This decision comes at a critical juncture when the national football team, the Lone Star, is grappling with poor performances in international competitions and desperately needs support for talent development and infrastructure enhancement.

Despite these financial constraints, the National County Sports Meet continues to play a vital role in Liberia's social landscape. It serves as a platform for national reconciliation, bringing together diverse ethnic groups and regions. The event also stimulates local economies, creating short-term job opportunities and boosting economic activities in host counties. As Youth and Sports Minister Jeror Cole Bangalu aptly noted, the County Meet transcends sports, serving as a vehicle for economic empowerment for many Liberians.

Moreover, the tournament provides a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, allowing different regions to showcase their traditions and fostering mutual understanding among Liberians. In a country grappling with high unemployment and increasing drug use among youth, the event offers a constructive outlet for young people, channeling their energies into positive activities.

However, the government's approach to sports development appears short-sighted. The prioritization of the County Meet over other sporting initiatives suggests a focus on short-term, visible events rather than sustainable, long-term sports development. While the County Meet undoubtedly contributes to immediate national unity, this approach may hinder Liberia's ability to compete on the international stage and develop professional athletes in the long run.

The reliance on private sponsorships, such as the L$5 million deal with Winners Incorporated, raises questions about the sustainability and independence of national sporting events. While private sector involvement is valuable, it should complement, not replace, robust government support. A more balanced allocation of resources, supporting both grassroots events like the County Meet and professional sports development, would better serve Liberia's long-term sporting and social goals.

While the National County Sports Meet plays a crucial role in fostering unity in Liberia's divided society, the government's overall approach to sports funding and development requires serious reconsideration. The current strategy risks sacrificing long-term sporting excellence for short-term social benefits, a trade-off that may prove costly for Liberia's future on the international sports stage.

As Liberia moves forward, it is imperative that policymakers strike a balance between supporting unifying events like the County Meet and investing in sustainable sports development. Only through such a balanced approach can Liberia hope to harness the full potential of sports as a tool for national unity and international competitiveness.
