Has Liberia become a Police State?

Liberia's descent into a police state is unfolding with alarming speed under President Joseph Boakai's administration. The recent actions of the National Security Agency (NSA) and Liberia National Police (LNP) paint a grim picture of a nation veering dangerously close to authoritarian rule.

The arbitrary detention and alleged torture of Thomas Etheridge, arrested on December 18, 2024, near the Capitol Building, exemplifies the erosion of civil liberties. Etheridge's continued incarceration without formal charges, well beyond the constitutionally mandated 48-hour period, flagrantly violates Liberian law and international human rights standards.

Reports of NSA surveillance targeting opposition figures John Nyanti, Amos Koffa, and Alvin Wesseh further corroborate the government's apparent crackdown on dissent. These individuals' association with the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) party suggests a concerted effort to stifle political opposition.

The writ of habeas corpus filed on January 10, 2025, challenging Etheridge's detention, serves as a critical test of Liberia's judiciary. The outcome will reveal whether the courts can effectively check executive overreach or have become subservient to authoritarian whims.

Alvin Wesseh's claim that security forces, including NSA operatives, surrounded his home on January 10, 2025, adds another layer to the unfolding crisis. The alleged pretext – suspicion of plans to disrupt President Boakai's State of the Nation Address – smacks of political persecution disguised as national security concerns.

The NSA's history of controversial actions, including past incidents of arrests and property seizures targeting foreign nationals, provides a troubling context for current events. This pattern suggests a long-standing tendency towards overreach that has now metastasized into a full-blown assault on democratic norms.

The government's silence in the face of these allegations is deafening. Neither the Ministry of Justice nor the Inspector General of the LNP has offered any explanation or justification for the actions of security forces, fueling speculation and fear among the populace.

The targeting of opposition figures and journalists echoes the playbook of authoritarian regimes worldwide. By silencing critical voices, the Boakai administration appears to be paving the way for unchecked power and the dismantling of democratic institutions.

The international community's muted response to these developments is concerning. The absence of strong condemnation from regional bodies and global powers may embolden the Liberian government to pursue its authoritarian agenda further.

Civil society organizations and human rights defenders find themselves in an increasingly precarious position. Their ability to operate freely and hold the government accountable is crucial for maintaining democratic governance in Liberia.

The upcoming hearing on January 13, 2025, regarding Etheridge's detention will be pivotal. It will either reaffirm the rule of law or signal its complete capitulation to executive authority.

Liberia stands at a crossroads. The actions taken in the coming weeks and months will determine whether the nation continues its slide into police state tactics or reclaims its commitment to democratic principles. The eyes of the world must remain fixed on Monrovia, lest another African democracy falls victim to the siren song of authoritarianism.
