Access to healthcare: shortage of healthcare facilities and workers

Liberia's healthcare system is struggling to meet the needs of its population. One of the biggest challenges facing the healthcare system is access. According to the World Health Organization, Liberia had only 0.84 physicians and 0.61 nurses and midwives per 1,000 population in 2020. This is significantly lower than the recommended minimum threshold of 2.3 healthcare workers per 1,000 population needed to achieve essential health coverage. In addition, only 42% of the population has access to basic health services within an hour of travel time.

Furthermore, there is a maldistribution of healthcare facilities, with the majority located in urban areas. The rural population, which comprises about two-thirds of the country's population, has limited access to healthcare facilities and services.

In terms of healthcare infrastructure, Liberia has only 0.03 hospital beds and 0.01 physicians per 1,000 population. This is far below the average for low-income countries, which have 0.9 hospital beds and 0.8 physicians per 1,000 population. Additionally:

  • About 70% of the population of Liberia lives in rural areas.

  • About 40% of the population of Liberia lives below the poverty line.

Addressing these challenges requires a multi-pronged approach that includes investment in healthcare infrastructure, recruitment and retention of healthcare workers, and improving healthcare financing and insurance coverage.
